Just because you look out your window and see nothing but flat land for miles that doesn't mean that there isn't something that could be block your signal from reaching you. Since television signals do not go through terrain blockages, but rather hit the object and stop or are deflected in another direction, a slight rise in the landscape miles away from you can wreak havoc on reception.
